The Rosenbach specialices in books illuminated manuscripts, Parchment, rough
drafts, and first editions. If you love the variations and beauty of the
printed word, they will love your presence. You are not allowed absolute
freedom in the opulent town - house galleries, of free rein among the 30,000
rare books and 270,000 documents. Some rooms preserve the Rosenbach's
elegant living quaters, with antique furniture and Sully paintings. Others
are devoted to authors and illustators Marriane Moore's Greenwich village
study is reproduced in its entirety, and the Maurice Sendak drawings
represent only tht tip of his iceburg. Holdings include the original
manuscipt of Joyce's Ulusses and first edition of Melville in the author's
own bookcase Small special exhibitions are tucked in thoughout the house,
and don't miss the shop behind the entrance for bargains in greeting card
and a superb collection of Sendak. Some welcome changes are faking place,
with access for people with disabilities and the option of either guided or
un accompained visits, However, Parts of the Rosenbach will be closed to
visitors until December 2001 for necessary work.
