This park was founded in 1990 in order to conserve the culture and beliefs
of the Athabascan people. It also portrays the disappearing heritage of the
Denaina Athabuscan Indians in the south central part of Alaska. This non -
profit organisations specific purpose include the promotion, devlopment
assistance, and enhancement of Elktunar education, social and culture
values. This historical park also includes a museum filled with native art
and historical exhibits displaying native lifestyles and traditiona. Also
the cemestry has colorful spirit houses, which use specific colors to
identity specific tribes and are placed over graves of relatives. Also
orthodox crosses can be seen on the gravestones of the deceased that once
belonged to the Orthodox church.
