Designed as a memorial to California's World War I casualties the
neoclassical structure is an exact replica of the Legion of Honor Palce in
Paris. The Legion of Honor reopened in late 1995, after a 2 year $ 34.6
million renovation and seismic upgreding that was stalled by the discovery
of almost 300 turn of the 20th century coffins. The extertors grassy
expanses, cliff - side paths, and incredible view of the Golden Gate make
this an absolute must visit attraction before you even get in the door. But
the inside is equally impressive. The museum's permanent collection covers
4000 years of art and includes paintings, scalpture, and decorative arts
from Erope, as well as international tapestries, prints, and drawings.
