Breathtaking views mingle with the early history of san Diego, which began
when Juan Rodrkguez Carbillo arrived in 1542. His statue dominates the tip
of point Loma, which is also a vantage point for watching migrating gray
whales en route from December through March The restored lighthouse allows a
glimpse of what life was like here in the past century. National Park
Service rangers lead walks at the monument, and there are tide pools that
beg for exploration. Free 30 minute tilms on Cabrillo tide pools, and
California gray whales are shown on the hour dailys from 10am to 4pm. The
drive from downtown is about half hour, Gray Line tours also offers an
excursion to the monument.
