The region in and around the Carrabasset Valley can be summed up in six
words, big peaks, wid woods, deep lakes. The crowning jewel of the region is
Sugarloaf Mountain. Maine's second highest peak at 4237 feet. Distinct from
nearby peaks because of its pyramidal shape, the mountain has been developed
for top notch skiing and offers the largest vertical drop in Maine, the best
selection of winter activities, and a wide range of accommodations. While
Sugarloaf draws the lion's share of visitors, it's not the only game in
town. Nearby kingfield is an attractive, historic town with a venerable old
hotel, it has more of the character of an Old west outpost than of classic
New England other. Valley towns offering limited services for travelers
include Eustis, Stratton and Carrabasses Valley. Outside the villages and
ski resort, it's all rugged hills, tumbling streams, and spectacular natural
surroundings. The muscular mountes of the Biglow Range provide terrain for
some of the state's best hiking, and Flagstaff Lake is the place for
flatwater canoeing amid majestic surroundings. |
