Cool nights make for good sleeping in the hot summer months. For the most part
there are no shade trees within the park but some sites have shelters for
picnicking, etc. The 20,291 acres of water offers excellent trout and walleye
fishing. Wildlife and waterfowl are abundant in the area. Full service hook-up
RV sites, fee use boat ramp, gasoline, fishing licenses & supplies, ice,
groceries, etc., are available at the Seminoe Boat Club (307) 320-3043 located
10 S.E. of the park and at the Miracle Mile Ranch (307) 325-6710) located
approx. 18 miles N.W. of the park near the famous Miracle Mile fishing area.
All designated campsites have picnic areas and campfire rings. Restroom
facilities and drinking water are within close proximity to each campsite in
both the North and the South Red Hills areas of the park. A trailer dump station
and pull-through sites are available in the North Red Hills Campground. A 35
foot RV length or less is recommended at this park.
Boat ramps are available for eventually all water levels.
Travel in the winter months in not recommended without four-wheel drive and/or
tire chains. Seminoe has 180 miles of shoreline-one of the largest man-made
reservoirs in Wyoming and the largest of the Wyoming State Parks system. Vehicle
access is limited due to the checkerboard land pattern of public and privately
owned land between the shoreline and the county roads. Camping elevation is
approx. 6,400 to 6,500 feet.
Limited services and facilities are available during the winter months. Tire
chains and/or four wheel drives only are recommended during winter weather from
Seminoe State Park North to the Miracle Mile and Alcova Dam Areas.
Brief History
The Seminoe Mountains around Seminoe State Park were once the site for gold
prospecting during the late 1800s. The name "Seminoe" is commonly assumed to
come from the Seminole tribe, but is an Americanized spelling of the French name
Cimineau. Basil Cimineau Lajeunesse was a French trapper in the area in the
1800s. Seminoe State Park, located on the northwest side of the reservoir, was
established in 1965 through an agreement between the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation
and the Wyoming Recreation Commission (the predecessor to Wyoming State Parks &
Historic Sites). Seminoe is just 34 miles north of Sinclair and boasts good
fishing for trout and walleye. Boaters enjoy the largest reservoir in the state
park system. Only 12 miles north of the park is Wyoming's "Miracle Mile," a
prime fishing stretch of the North Platte River.
Things to Do
Catch a View of Wildlife
In and near Seminoe State Park, Wyoming wildlife is at its finest. Patient
visitors will be rewarded with a variety of creatures passing by like big horn
sheep, elk, moose, mule deer, antelope, coyote, mountain lion, bobcat, fox,
raccoon, skunk, jack rabbit and cottontail rabbit. Bird watchers may glimpse the
American or Bald Eagle as well as several types of waterfowl. Bring your
binoculars, sit back and enjoy!
The Fishing's Good! Good river fishing can be found all the way along the North
Platte River from I-80 at Fort Fred Steele State Historic Site all the way to
the Gray Reef Area below Alcova Dam. In between lies the famous "Miracle Mile,"
well known for its blue ribbon fishing. Seminoe reservoir offers some great
fishing, particularly in June and July, for both trout and walleye. Both species
inhabit the entire reservoir though there are areas of greater concentration for
each. State record walleye have been pulled from Seminoe in years past. Fishing
licenses are required and may be purchased in the area from:
Seminoe The Seminoe Boat Club
Rawlins Bi-Rite Drug Store & Sporting Goods
Muddy Gap Three Forks Muddy Gap Service (gas station)
