Kettle Moraine State Forest Southern Unit
|
|
The Southern Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest is 30 miles long, extending
from the village of Dousman, Wisconsin, almost to the city of Whitewater. Forest
Headquarters is 3 miles west of the village of Eagle on State Highway 59 (see
how to get there). More than 20,000 acres of glacial hills, kettles, lakes,
prairie restoration sites, pine woods and hardwood forests can be found in the
Southern Unit, making this a popular area for a wide variety of visitors.
Visitors to the forest can camp in three family campgrounds, two group camps, or
a horse rider's campground, or backpack to an overnight shelter along the
historic Ice Age National Scenic Trail. Hiking, mountain biking, horse riding,
snowmobiling, or cross-country skiing on the more than 160 miles of trail
provide endless possibilities for adventure.
The forest also offers opportunities for swimming at two beaches, picnicking,
fishing, hunting, and touring three historic cabin sites.

The McMiller Sports Center [exit DNR] is in Eagle within the Southern Unit of
the Kettle Moraine State Forest. McMiller is owned by the Department of Natural
Resources and operated under lease by Wern Valley, Inc. This facility is
complete with several shooting ranges that are open to the public year round.
Also within the forest is Old World Wisconsin [exit DNR], considered to be
America's largest outdoor museum of rural life. This site has many displays such
as ethnic farmsteads that include furnished houses and rural outbuildings and
crossroads villages with their traditional small-town institutions.
Visit the forest headquarters to take advantage of a museum and informational
slide program and buy souvenirs.
