James River State

This ride's general location is on the eastern bank of the James River
approximately 25 miles northeast of Lynchburg and southeast of Charlottesville.
Scenery includes dense woods and open fields; the Tye River Overlook offers a
great view of the James and Tye Rivers. This is a good family ride. The only
sounds are the breezes whispering through the mixed oak hardwood forest and the
far-off wail of a freight train. Caball Trail is suitable for novice bikers,
although parts of it may be a bit difficult for youngsters whose climbing and
bike handling skills could be overstressed on some rough sections of trail. It's
gravel in some sections and grassy double-track in others, but this five-mile
loop is only the first of a system of multi-use trails that will eventually be
20 to 25 miles long. |
