When you think of Wyoming,
we bet you're thinkin' cowboys; you're thinkin' broad
sweeping vistas and Rocky Mountains, and rough ridin'
cowhands, and lots of...cows. But did you know that
Wyoming is also known as "The Equality State"? Yup. In
1869, Wyoming became the first state to grant women the
right to vote. You see, things aren't always what they
seem.
You may also be surprised to learn that in addition
to the annual ropin' and ridin' (Wyoming is home to one
of the nation's largest rodeos), the state also supports
a wide variety of cultural institutions, including the
State Museum and Art Gallery in Cheyenne, the Whitney
Gallery of Western Art, the Buffalo Bill Historical
Center, and not one but two symphony orchestras. But
Wyoming may be best known as the site of Yellowstone and
Grand Teton National Parks, surely two of the greatest
natural wonders in America. Old Faithful is still as
faithful as ever, belching up steam from the bubbling
ground of northern Wyoming, situated in a place where
clues about our prehistoric origins may be under our
very noses. Who knows? Perhaps the keys to your ancestry
are here in this surprising place.
