CAMPUS SUMMARY
Founded in 1846 to serve a frontier
society, Beloit College is
Wisconsin's first college. Beloit 's
40-acre campus is located on the
Wisconsin-Illinois state line, 90
miles northwest of Chicago, 50 miles
south of Madison, and 70 miles
southwest of Milwaukee, in a small
city (pop. 36,000) that noted
anthropologist Margaret Mead once
called "American society in a
microcosm." Situated on a 40 acre
wooded campus, Beloit combines look
and feel of an early New England
college with modern science
facilities and student center.
Native American effigy mounds,
including one of a large turtle, are
interspersed over the
fiber-optically linked campus. The
College is home to both a
world-famous anthropology museum and
an art museum, as well as a theatre
complex and television station. The
academic buildings of Beloit College
cluster around lawns dotted with the
pre-Columbian effigy mounds, while
across campus, residence halls form
a community of their own. A 25-acre
athletic field and newly renovated
Strong Memorial Stadium are located
a few blocks east of the main
campus. Beloit is a close-knit
community where 93% of students live
on campus all four years. Students
take advantage of the varied
resources offered in Chicago,
Milwaukee, and Madison, including
privileges on the University of
Wisconsin-Madison campus.
UNIQUE/SPECIAL PROGRAMS
Beloit
College offers over 50 areas of
study in 19 departments -- from
anthropology and biochemistry to
creative writing and economics and
management. At Beloit, students
learn by doing, and there are a
variety of programs that supplement
the academic curriculum. The college
experience is enriched with great
mentoring programs, research
projects, field studies, and study
abroad programs. Over half of all
Beloit students spend a semester
studying off-campus in either a
foreign country or in domestic
research and cooperative education
programs.
