Living in West Virginia
|
|
West Virginia is home to expert, creative artisans. Gift shops
in state parks stock many of the items they make. Shop for
ceramics, basketry, handmade furniture, weavings and folk-art
wood carvings. Glass-making has a long tradition in West
Virginia, and a number of factories and craftspeople still
pursue the techniques of blowing, etching and painting glass and
china. Consider the Blenko Glass Company in Milton or Fenton
Glass in Williamstown: Both have tours and gift shops. Fans of
Fiesta ware will want to visit the Homer Laughlin China Co.,
which introduced the line of china during the Depression. We
highly recommend the Trans Allegheny Book Store in Parkersburg,
built by Andrew Carnegie. Even the most serious bookhound will
be distracted by the glass floor, steep spiral staircases and
marble counters. There are also several factory outlet malls in
the state, and the state's position between colonial America and
the Midwest helps ensure that the antique stores are filled with
items from all periods of U.S. history. You may find Civil War
paraphernalia, mining gear and old moonshine stills.
