Rules in West Virginia
Construction contractors, including HVAC contractors, must be
licensed in West Virginia.
To get an application packet for a construction contractor's
license, contact the West Virginia Contractor Licensing Board at
http://www.labor.state.wv.us/.
Applicants need to have unemployment and workers' compensation
coverage in their home state or West Virginia. They will also
have to post a wage bond unless they work only in residential
contract work or have been doing construction work in West
Virginia for at least five years before applying for a license.
The bond must equal the total of their gross payroll for four
weeks at full capacity or production plus 15% for benefits.
The Licensing Board may also accept a license from another state
depending on the qualifications required in that state. Under
those circumstances the contractor will not have to take an exam
but will have to pay West Virginia's licensing fees.
A license is good for one year and costs $100. (However, this
does not include fees for the exams the Board requires for a
license.)
Applicants must pass a business and law exam and a trade exam
(for HVAC) to obtain a license. The exams are given by Experior,
which can be contacted at http://www.experioronline.com/. A
trade exam costs $42.40, and Experior has published a West
Virginia Contractors Reference Manual for preparing for the
exam, which is available for purchase for $63 (tax and shipping
included). The company also sells practice exams for $36.75
(includes tax and shipping).
