Licensing Rules in Washington

Washington requires all HVAC contractors to obtain specialty contractor’s licenses. All contractors must register for this license, and they must post a $12,000 bond if they register as a general contractor and a $6,000 bond if they register as a specialty contractor. Additionally, contractors must show that they have at least $50,000 of property damage insurance and $200,000 of public liability coverage. The Department will also request this information:

IRS employer account number

employment security number

industrial insurance number

state revenue tax number

If a contractor does not have the last three numbers, he/she can apply for a Washington Unified Business Identifier (UBI) at the Business License Center at http://www.dol.wa.gov/mls/buslic.htm.

The Contractor registration application fee is $103.20 and is good for two years.
