Rules in Utah
The Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing in Utah
requires a license to do construction work in the state, and
lists HVAC as a primary contractor classification. Applicants
can obtain a license form from http://www.commerce.state.ut.us/.
(There is also a myriad of other secondary classifications for
specialty work and interested persons should check the same
website for additional licensing requirements.)
To qualify for any license, applicants must:
provide proof of at least $100,000 for each incident and
$300,000 total liability insurance
provide proof of workers' compensation insurance
provide registration with Utah State Tax Commission
provide proof of registration with Utah Department of Employment
Security
provide proof of registration with the Internal Revenue Service
provide proof of registration with Utah Division of Corporations
provide proof of DBA registration with Utah Division of
Corporations
submit CPA complied, reviewed, or audited financial statement
submit three credit reports for all key company personnel
Some licenses also require you to pay $195 to the Residence Lien
Recovery Fund.
Applicants must also pass a business and law exam and a trade
exam. Additionally, to qualify for the exams for most trades
(including HVAC), applicants must have at least four years of
full-time related work experience. The exams are given by

The cost is $200 (nonrefundable) to file an application for a
primary classification license. The supplemental classification
application fee is $100. The business and law exam costs $79.
Each trade exam costs $79. The license is free and it's good for
two years, expiring July 31 of the odd-numbered years.
If you have a valid license in any of the following states, you
can apply for a Utah license by endorsement: Alabama, Arizona,
Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Michigan,
Mississippi, Nevada, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee,
Virginia, or West Virginia.
