They say everything's big
in Texas. You know how it is: Sashay on over for a
Texas-sized this, or belly up for a Texas-sized that.
The implication is that "this" or "that" is usually
generous, often spicy (literally and figuratively), and
almost always tall (again, get that imagination working
for you). The expression, "That's a mighty tall order,"
can only have come from Texas, and refers alternately to
what you might want from a restaurant menu to asking
John Wayne to rescue your grandmother from an evil
Snidley Whiplash. Whatever the task, Texans will usually
feel up to it.
Witness the growth of Texas cities in the past
century or so, since Texans have been up to building
them: Houston, once a blotch in an oil field, now boasts
an impressive downtown skyline and one of the most
thriving arts communities in the country;
Dallas-historically the seat of Texas culture and
refinement, that too having its own Texas
imprint-continues to be a leader in attracting the
country's best and brightest minds to its businesses,
cultural institutions, and media organizations (so that
even non-Texans can be honorary Texans); and Austin,
always a bit "off" by Texas standards, is fast becoming
the southwest's answer to Seattle for its easy lifestyle
and new music scene. Whatever your pleasure, Texas is
probably up to the task.
