Living in Texas
|
|
Shopping in Texas ranges from haute couture in Dallas and
Houston salons to folk art in San Antonio's mercados and funky
flea markets in small towns. Texas seems to have the most
roadside vendors of any state we've visited, and we're not
talking black-velvet paintings alone: You can get everything
from beef jerky to Mexican furniture to longhorn-cattle skulls,
usually at bargain prices. Texas is also the capital of Cowboy
kitsch furniture and decorations: This is the place to buy those
cowskin-covered chairs, antler chandeliers and cowboy-boot lamps
you've always wanted. Don't miss your shop for antiques, locally
made crafts and folk art and imports from Mexico. Western-wear
shops offer the usual selection of concho belts, bolo ties and
boots, but the wrangler looking to make a real impression will
want a pair of custom-made cowboy boots, which start around
US$400 a pair and go up, up, up. M. L. Leddy's Boots and
Saddlery in Fort Worth is just one of many custom bootmakers in
the state.
