The average household size is 2.57 persons compared to an average family size of 3.08 persons.

In 2005 retail trade was the largest of 20 major sectors. It had an average wage per job of $20,786. Per capita income grew by 17.3% between 1994 and 2004 (adjusted for inflation).

Buchanan County, established in 1858, was named for President James Buchanan. In 1861 the name was changed to Stephens County.
