Licensing Rules in Tennessee
You must have a license to do construction work in Tennessee. To
get an application for a contractor's license, contact the Board
of Licensing Contractors at http://www.state.tn.us/commerce/boards/contractors/index.html.
Applicants will have to fill out an extensive application for
the Board. Some important items that must be included are:
one reference letter from a past client or employer who can
comment on your construction work and experience or a code
official who has inspected your work
a current financial statement
a copy of your charter if you're a Tennessee corporation or a
Certificate of Authority from the Tennessee Secretary of State
if you are incorporated outside Tennessee
You will also have to complete a worksheet to determine monetary
limits for your company. The limits are based on ten times your
working capital or net worth. There are some possibilities for
applicants to increase the limits with guaranty agreements and
lines of credit.
Applicants will have to pass the Tennessee business and law
exam, and for HVAC contractors, a trade exam, to get a license
from the Board. The exams are given by Experior, which can be
contacted at http://www.experioronline.com/.
Registration for a contractor’s license costs $25 per year. It
costs $150 (nonrefundable) to file an application and receive a
license on passing the exams. Exams are $45 each. A license is
good for one year.
