CAMPUS SUMMARY |
| Haywood Community College
opened in August 1965 as Haywood Industrial Education
Center with one curriculum program and 15 students.
Today, HCC offers over 42 curriculum programs to over
2600 students. Aproximately 6,270 more students attend
classes through its continuing education division,
including adult basic education, GED preparation,
occupational courses, and community service programs.
HCC is located in Clyde, North Carolina, on an 83-acre
campus, which features an arboretum and teaching forest.
The natural beauty of the campus is a backdrop for
modern facilities, including a Student Center with an
1,150-seat auditorium, state-of-the-art labs and shops,
and a child care center. At easily accessible sites
close to the main campus are the Human Resources
Development Center, Continuing Education buildings, and
the Regional High Technology Center杘ne of only two in

UNIQUE PROGRAMS |
| Natural Resources programs
use the college's scenic setting and the surrounding
areas of Western North Carolina as a learning
laboratory. The entire campus is a designated arboretum
with an impressive plant collection that is used as a
teaching lab. A greenhouse, woody plant nursery, and
orchard provide students with an excellent opportunity
for real-life work experience. The college also has a
320-acre teaching forest off campus. Students use the
forest as an outdoor lab for surveying, data collection,
and forest ecology. Students in many of our Natural
Resources programs have competed at national levels
making impressive showings as they beat out many
students from four-year institutions. Environmental
education and volunteer opportunities with professional
agencies are also available for students. The College
offers associate degree programs in Fish and Wildlife
Management Technology, Forest Management Technology,
Geographic Information Systems/Global Positioning
Systems Technology, and Horticulture Technology. With a
well-established international reputation the
one-of-a-kind professional crafts at Haywood Community
College has become an acknowledged world-class program.
Under the guidance of specialist faculty of well-known
and respected artisans in its four areas of study -
clay, fiber, jewelry, and wood - its students develop
techniques plus receive instruction in marketing and
business skills. Taught in an environment that inspires
and motivates the creative spirit, each area of study
provides students the basis needed to become a
recognized crafts designer and producer. A career in
film and video production can place you at the cutting
edge of this growing industry. Students seeking a career
in media have several options in their professional
preparation each emphasizing the basics of production.
Through the Alliance Program, which leads to a BS degree
in communications, a student can prepare for a career in
broadcast television by completing three years of study
at the College and a final year at Western Carolina
University. Through the AA pre-major program a student
can prepare for transfer to a university to complete
their professional study. Through the AAS degree program
a student can prepare to enter the film and video
production workforce upon graduation. |
