Special Programs:
List College Fellows Program: The List College Fellows Program
is designed to attract undergraduates of exceptional promise and
superior achievement and to enrich their academic experience. As
a supplement to the existing curriculum, the program fosters
students' continued intellectual growth and enables them to
explore subjects in greater depth than is normally possible in
an undergraduate program of study. Under the guidance of List
College faculty members, participants in the Fellows Program
contribute to the creation of an academic environment of
intellectual excitement and rigor. Students selected for the
Fellows Program are awarded a merit scholarship upon their entry
into the program. They have the opportunity to meet informally
with distinguished visitors from the academic world and the
Jewish community at occasional dinners and lectures sponsored by
the program. Fellows participate in a series of seminars that
are interdisciplinary in structure and thematic in content.
Fellows are required to participate in at least three such
seminars during their college career. Each seminar is specially
developed for the Fellows Program. Past seminars have included
The Interpretation of the Binding of Isaac, Modern Yiddish
Fabulists and The Poetry of Job. In their junior year, Fellows
Program participants may be invited to pursue an independent
research project, usually in their area of concentration. Under
the supervision of a member of the faculty, they transform their
research project into an honor's thesis which is submitted to
the faculty member and a second reader, usually the dean. It is
expected that Fellows remain in good academic standing. A grade
point average of less than 3.33 in any semester will make the
student subject to dismissal from the Fellows Program. Summer
Study: Many students choose to take courses during summer school
to earn credits toward the core and major requirements. All
course choices must receive the approval of the dean. Junior
Year Abroad List College students may spend one or both
semesters of their junior year abroad. Many students choose to
study in Israel, especially at the Hebrew University. Semester
study abroad at other accredited universities outside of Israel
is also encouraged. Programs must be approved by the deans and
departmental advisers of both List and Columbia or Barnard.
Students must also register and pay the appropriate fee at JTS
for each semester abroad. Credit will be determined upon receipt
of an official transcript from the foreign university. No more
than 6 transfer credits will be counted toward the major.
Pre-Rabbinic/Pre-Cantorial Track: Students in List College who
plan to continue their studies in JTS's Rabbinical School or H.L.
Miller Cantorial School may earn credit in these schools based
on their undergraduate coursework. Students interested in
attending The Rabbinical School are encouraged to major in
Talmud; those interested in attending the H.L. Miller Cantorial
School are encouraged to major in Jewish music. Students will be
directed to take courses of study that will enable them to
fulfill both List College and Rabbinical School or H.L. Miller
Cantorial School requirements simultaneously. Following this
track does not ensure admission to The Rabbinical School or the
H.L. Miller Cantorial School, each of which retains its own
admissions procedures and requirements. BA/MA Option: Students
in List College with at least a 3.33 grade point average at List
and a 3.0 in the liberal arts course s required for the BA may
apply to a special program leading to an accelerated MA degree.
Students accepted to the program will be permitted to apply 9
credits of graduate-level Judaica course work to both the BA and
the MA in The Graduate School of JTS. Students pursuing an MA in
Jewish education from the Davidson School may apply an
additional 3 credits in education, for a total of 12
graduate-level credits towards the degree. Students interested
in pursuing the BA/MA option meet with the dean of each school
and the departmental advisers to determine exactly what
combination of elective and major credits toward the BA will
also be accepted for the MA degree as well as what additional
course work will be required. Acceptance to List College does
not ensure admission to The Graduate School or the Davidson
School, which can only take place after all the requirements for
the BA have been completed. All schools at JTS maintain their
own admissions procedures and requirements.
