Caroline County, MD

Origin: Caroline County was created in 1773 from
Dorchester and Queen Anne's counties (Chapter
10, Acts of 1773). Lady Caroline Eden gave her
name to the county. She was the wife of
Maryland's last colonial governor, Robert Eden
(1741-1784); the daughter of Charles Calvert,
Fifth Lord Baltimore; and the sister of
Frederick Calvert, Sixth Lord Baltimore. |

Caroline County is one of
about 3,141 counties and county equivalents in
the United States. It has 320.1 sq. miles in
land area and a population density of 99.4 per
square mile. In the last three decades of the
1900s its population grew by 50.5%. On the 2000
census form, 98.7% of the population reported
only one race, with 14.8% of these reporting
African-American. The population of this county
is 2.7% Hispanic (of any race). The average
household size is 2.64 persons compared to an
average family size of 3.03 persons.
In 2005 manufacturing was the largest of 20
major sectors. It had an average wage per job of
$33,783. Per capita income grew by 22.2% between
1994 and 2004 (adjusted for inflation). |
