Baton Rouge is located at 110km northwest of New
Orleans. Situated upriver from New Orleans, Baton Rouge
(pop. 227,818) is the second-largest city in the state
and a burgeoning Mississippi River port city as well as
Louisiana's political capital. Baton Rouge is the home
of Louisiana State University, which runs the Rural Life
Museum, a working plantation that has a collection of
artifacts that once belonged to sharecroppers in the
region. At the Louisiana Naval War Memorial on the
Mississippi River,visitors can tour a World War II
