Springfield is located at 290km southwest of
Chicago. Most people visit the state capital to see sites
related to Abraham Lincoln. In nearby Petersburg, New
Salem State Historic Site re-creates the early-1800s
village of New Salem, where young Abraham Lincoln lived.
It includes reconstructed homes, shops and mills staffed
by costumed guides.
The site of present-day Springfield was settled about
1818 and was made the county seat in 1821.The community
incorporated as a town in 1832 and became the state
capital in 1837; city incorporation took place in 1840.
During the 19th century the city developed as a shipping
and coal-mining center. |
