Springfield Illinois

Springfield is located at 290km southwest of Chicago. Most people visit the state capital to see sites related to Abraham Lincoln. In nearby Petersburg, New Salem State Historic Site re-creates the early-1800s village of New Salem, where young Abraham Lincoln lived. It includes reconstructed homes, shops and mills staffed by costumed guides.

The site of present-day Springfield was settled about 1818 and was made the county seat in 1821.The community incorporated as a town in 1832 and became the state capital in 1837; city incorporation took place in 1840. During the 19th century the city developed as a shipping and coal-mining center.
