Springfield,
the county seat of Effingham County, is named for a mineral
spring in the area. The city was founded in 1799 and
incorporated as a town December 31, 1838.
The
Effingham County courthouse in Springfield was built in 1908 and
is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Also, the
four square block surrounding the courthouse is designated on
the registry.
The
Historic Effingham Society Museum built in 1934 is located in
Springfield. This two-story brick jail houses a collection of
Revolutionary, Civil War and Indian artifacts.
