Pembroke,
the county seat of Bryan County, was incorporated August 23,
1905. The birth of Pembroke is attributable to the construction
of the Seaboard Railroad line in the late 1800s. The first
resident of the town (which was founded in 1890, although not
incorporated until 1905) was the railroad construction foreman
who lived in a caboose on the railroad siding. That caboose is
present today in the city park downtown.
Named
for Pembroke W. Williams, a leading citizen of Bryan County
during the 1890s, the city was the leading business and railroad
center for the area in the early 20th century. Pembroke became
the county seat in 1937 due to a County Referendum moving the
county seat from Clyde (a town which no longer exists) to
Pembroke, due to Pembroke's banking, business and transportation
prominence.
Pembroke
was home to the late Jack W. Shuman, a prominent state
legislator and businessman in southeast Georgia during the 1960s
and 1970s.
The
Christmas in Pembroke Festival is held the second Saturday in
December and features a parade and sugar cane grinding.
