Moultrie,
the county seat for Colquitt County, was incorporated December
13, 1859. The city was named after General William Moultrie, a
revolutionary war hero and Governor from South Carolina.
The
Colquitt County courthouse in Moultrie was built in 1902 and
remodeled in 1956. The courthouse is listed on the National
Register of Historic Places and is currently undergoing
renovation.
The
Sunbelt Agriculture Exposition, the largest farm show in the
U.S., is held annually in Moultrie. Each year the city hosts the
Festival on the Square, the Calico Arts and Crafts Shows and the
Scottish Festival Weekend.
The
city's downtown commercial district is listed on the National
Register of Historic Places.
Moultrie
is home to the award-winning Colquitt County Arts Center. This
center has been recognized as a model rural arts agency in the
visual, literary, and performing arts.
Moultrie
Technical Institute, located within the city limits, is a member
of the state's Department of Technical and Adult Education.
