Macon,
incorporated in 1823, is the county seat of Bibb County. The
city is named in honor of Senator Nathaniel Macon of North
Carolina.
Macon's
City Hall served as the temporary state capitol, under the
Confederacy, from November 1864 to March 1865. The Bibb County
courthouse was constructed in 1924 and remodeled in 1940. The
courthouse is listed within the National Register of Historic
Places.
Macon's
storied tradition that began thousands of years ago has been
traced back and represented by their monuments. Macon has more
listings on the National Register of Historic Places than any
other city in Georgia. The city auditorium has the largest
covered copper dome in the world and the Hay House, built in the
1850s, is a historic museum.
The
design of Macon's city structure came from the ancient city of
Babylon. It was designed to contain multiple parks and large
roads. At one point, the city required its citizens to plant
shade trees in their front yards.
The
Georgia Music Hall of Fame and the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame
are located in Macon.
A
number of famous musicians are from Macon including rock and
roll artist Little Richard, the rock group The Allman Brothers,
and soulful singer Randy Crawford.
Annually,
Macon hosts the Georgia International Cherry Blossom Festival.
This event showcases concerts, tours, shows, arts and crafts and
a number of blossoms of the flowering Yoshino cherry trees.
Macon
is home to Wesleyan College, founded in 1836 as the Georgia
Female College, the first college in the world chartered to
grant degrees to women. Other schools located in the city
include Macon State College, Central Georgia Technical College,
and Mercer University.
Macon's good fortune during the Civil War is our
good fortune Nowadays. General Sherman spared the city on his
March to the Sea and the result is a city full of fine
architecture from centuries past. More than 50 sites in Macon
are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
