Institution Overview
Valdosta
State University is a regional university located on 169 acres
of land near the heart of Valdosta. The campus features
beautifully preserved Spanish Mission architecture and is a
standout in this moderately sized city with the friendliness of
a small town and the conveniences and cultural attributes of a
metropolitan area. The university serves students in the heart
of South Georgia with a comprehensive curriculum.
More than 10,400 undergraduate and graduate students attend
Valdosta State University from almost every county in Georgia,
44 states and 68 countries. The size of the student body enables
the university to offer students a close relationship with their
professors in classes with a student to professor ratio of 20 to
1.
Five colleges -- Arts, Arts and Sciences, Business
Administration, Education and Nursing -- as well as a graduate
division offer 53 undergraduate majors, 11 master's degrees (23
majors), 10 education specialist majors and a doctorate in
education with three majors. Nationally accredited programs
include art, business, education, nursing, sports medicine and
speech pathology.
Valdosta State University is an innovator in the use of
technology to enhance instruction. The Harley Langdale Jr.
College of Business Administration offers a collaborative WebMBA
program with four other Georgia universities. A web-based MPA
program, in addition to an on-campus program, is offered by the
College of Arts and Sciences. The university affords
opportunities for distance learning at off-campus locations
throughout its South Georgia region, including Kings Bay Naval
Base on the east coast of Georgia and Moody Air Force Base in
Lowndes County.
Students can participate in 145 recognized student
organizations, offering a wide variety of programs and
activities. The university also boasts a championship NCAA
Division II athletic program. The "Blazers" compete in a total
of nine men's and women's intercollegiate sports.
Founded in 1906, the institution was named the South Georgia
State Normal College for young ladies in 1914. In 1922, a
legislative act changed the name to Georgia State Woman's
College and authorized a four-year program leading to the
bachelor's degree. The Board of Regents made the College
co-educational in 1950, changing the name to Valdosta State
College. VSC became Valdosta State University in 1993.
