Institution Overview
Macon
State College is one of two state colleges of the University
System of Georgia. Serving the central Georgia region with
professionally oriented degree programs, this suburban college
offers bachelor's degrees that address the area's workforce
needs by preparing students in the important disciplines of
business, communications, health and information technology. As
a complement to its baccalaureate mission, Macon State also
offers 40 quality two-year transfer programs.
Day and evening classes for full- and part-time study are
offered on three campuses. The 167-acre main campus, located in
the city of Macon, is served by a fiber optics network which
connects more than 600 computers linking students, faculty and
staff. The main campus also has 13 major buildings including a
library, arts complex and a new student life center. Other major
academic buildings are devoted to health sciences, humanities,
information technology, natural sciences and math, and the
social sciences. The Robins Resident Center, located at Robins
Air Force Base, serves military and civilian employees, and the
Warner Robins Center extends the reach and services of the
college.
More than 4,100 traditional and non-traditional students
commute to Macon State College, primarily from a seven-county
area in Central Georgia. Their average age is 27. Minority
students account for about one-third of the student population.
While recognized for its strength in information technology,
Macon State continues its focus on a strong foundation in
liberal arts and its success in connecting with the region
through innovative partnerships with area business, industry and
government. The college is a key player in the economic
development of Central Georgia and a principle provider of
talent to support the economic, social and cultural vitality of
the region. Students have many opportunities to participate in
activities outside of class. The college has more than 20
student organizations including professional and honor
societies, student government and student media. The college
frequently brings guests lecturers, artists, performers and
musicians to the campus. Most events are open to the community.
Macon Junior College was chartered in 1965 to serve the
rapidly growing mid-state area. In 1968, the college opened with
1,110 students, the largest charter class for an institution of
higher education in the state's history. The college formally
became Macon State College in 1997.
