Abbeville, the
county seat of Wilcox County, was incorporated on September 15,
1883. The city was settled by French Huguenots and was the home
of U.S. Vice President John C. Calhoun.
Hernandez DeSoto and
his explorers passed through what is now known as Abbeville,
crossing the Ocmulgee River and the present day eastern boundary
line of the city limits. A historical marker on the courthouse
grounds commemorates his visit.
Abbeville was the site
of Battle at Breakfast Creek and a Confederate Memorial was
erected in front of the county courthouse. The Wilcox County
courthouse, built in 1903, is listed on the National Register of
Historic Places.
The Ocmulgee River,
which is located within the city limits, provides ample
opportunities for boating, fishing and camping. The area is also
home to many deer, wild turkeys, quail and other wildlife.
The city of Abbeville,
famous for its large population of wild hogs, is often nicknamed
"Wild Hog Capital of Georgia". The Ocmulgee Wild Hog Festival is
held annually in May with food, arts and crafts, live music and
various contests.
