The Monterey Peninsula is located at 135 km south of San
Francisco. See the beautiful coastline and idyllic
communities of the Monterey Peninsula. The area is most
often associated with rocky coasts, grand golf courses
and native son John Steinbeck. Monterey itself has a
full day's worth of activities. Immortalized by
Steinbeck in the novel of the same name, the
neighborhood has come a long way since the
hookers-and-hobos days depicted in the book. The
hallmark of Cannery Row is one of the largest and most
exciting aquariums in the world, Monterey Bay Aquarium,
housed in the converted Hovden Cannery. Fisherman's
Wharf, originally a pier where schooners unloaded cargo,
is now a promenade of fish markets, wine-tasting bars,
shops and restaurants. From the wharf, it's easy to spot
Monterey's seals, sea lions and otters. Other
Monterey-area points of interest: Point Pinos
Lighthouse. The Monarch butterflies in Pacific Grove and
Laguna Seca Raceway. Pebble Beach is known for beautiful
homes and one of the finest and most difficult golf
courses anywhere, Pebble Beach Golf Links.
