Flagstaff Arizona

Flagstaff is located at 175km north of Phoenix. It is the largest population center north of Phoenix, home of Northern Arizona University and gateway for many of the state's northern travel attractions. At 2,125 m, Flagstaff's climate is much different from that found in the desert commonly associated with Arizona. Visit the Museum of Northern Arizona, which has exhibits exploring the geology, paleontology and biology of the area, including a nature trail that offers an easy and enjoyable hike. It's especially impressive in the spring and fall because of its lush trees, plank bridges and immense blocks of basalt. Flagstaff's downtown historic district has redecorate late-Victorian and art-deco architecture. We especially like the Orpheum Theatre.

Daily Amtrak trains heading both east and west pull in at the station in the very center of town, part of which doubles as a very helpful visitor center; Mon-Sat 7am-6pm, Sun 7am-5pm; tel 928/774-9541. At the time of writing, the company that previously ran bus connections to the Grand Canyon ceased operations; contact the visitor center to see whether, as planned, they've arranged an alternative shuttle service. Northern Arizona University and Lowell Observatory are here. Prehistoric Native American ruins and the scenic Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument are in the area.
