Montgomery Alabama

Montgomery is located at 145 km south of Birmingham. It was
designed by Maya Lin . Be sure to visit Dexter Avenue King
Memorial Baptist Church, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as
pastor in the 1950s, pioneered the country's civil-rights
awakening. The first capital of the Confederacy, Montgomery is
also where the first electric streetcar operated and where the
Wright Brothers established the first school of powered flight.
Alabama's capital building, built in 1853, has been extensively
restored.
The visitor center is at 300 Water St which open on Mon-Fri
8.30am-5pm, Sat 9am-4pm, Sun noon-4pm; tel 334/261-1100. Tours
start at Old Alabama Town , an area of restored houses and
museums immediately behind which open on Mon-Sat 9am-3.30pm, Sun
1-3.30pm.
You might also consider visiting the Jasmine Hill Gardens and
Outdoor Museum At the Wynton M. Blount Cultural Park, you can
visit the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts or attend performances
of the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, which stages highly
regarded performances year-round.
Montgomery is the site of Huntingdon College, Alabama State
University, Faulkner University, Troy State University
Montgomery, a branch of Auburn University, and a junior college.
Points of interest include the colonial-style State Capitol,
which served as the capitol of the Confederacy during the first
few months of the American Civil War; the Montgomery Museum of
Fine Arts, featuring displays of American art; and a museum
devoted to F. Scott Fitzgerald, located in the house once
occupied by the writer.
